BADOC FESTIVITY

Badoc is known to be one of the oldest towns in the province of Ilocos Norte and the birthplace of Juan Luna, the most famous Filipino Painter. The Bado-Badoc festival celebrates the rich history of this town named after a humble grass called bado-badoc which was growing abundantly along its river banks. Not long after the the first mass in the town celebrated on June 24, 1572, the Spaniards settled and established a well structured town center. Badoc developed into an opulent and peaceful Spanish town manifested by the stone and brick structures scattered around the poblacion. All of the town’s blessings are attributed to the La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc, the patroness of Ilocos Norte. Estimated to be 400 years old, the revered image of La Virgen Milagrosa is enshrined and venerated in the more than 200 year old imposing brick-and-stone baroque church. Now referred to as a God-sent miracle, the image was found, together with a life-size crucifix (enshrined in neighboring town of Sinait, Ilocos Sur), inside a wooden box floating along the shores of Lugo Village in 1620. Countless miracles have been ascribed to the beloved image of La Virgin Milagrosa which have kindled and heightened the veneration and devotion of the people from the Ilocos region for which the image was really meant. Realizing the intense and widespread devotion, the Diocese of Laoag proclaimed the wooden image of La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc as the Patrones of Ilocos Norte on May 2, 1980. Indeed, Badoc has gone a long way from the humble river grass to a progressive municipality producing onion, rice, and tobacco, all under he blessings of La Virgen Milagrosa.

 THE JUAN LUNA SHRINE

The Juan Luna Shrine is a two-storey structure made of clay bricks and molave wood. This restored ancestral home of the Luna clan is itself a life-sized historical artifact that speaks of affluence and classic elegance. The first floor is where the treasure trove of collections is categorically displayed, while the second floor is divided into 4 sections: the living room, the bedroom, the chapel and the azotea.A few things that represent Juan Luna’s brother, General Antonio Luna, are also displayed in the shrine. These include his sword and uniform and the letter he wrote to Leon Apacible. Like old edifices, the Juan Luna Shrine's vintage touch evokes natural charm.

La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc

The La Virgen Milagrosa. History traces the life-sized statue to Nagasaki, Japan. It was sent floating in the sea by missionaries operating in secret in Japan (for fear of persecution during the Tokugawa Regime), along with the Miraculous Statue of the Black Nazarene (Sinait's Santo Cristo Milagroso). It was first found by local fishermen in the shores of Barangay Dadalaquiten, on the boundary between Sinait and Badoc, in the year 1620. Only fishermen from Sinait were able to move the Statue of the Black Nazarene. The fishermen from Badoc, unable to move the Black Nazarene, were able to move the La Virgen Milagrosa that came with it--which was, in turn, unable to be moved by the fishermen from Sinait. They took the statues to their respective towns, hence becoming their patron saints. Today The La Virgen Milagrosa is enshrined at the Badoc Church.

Now, the church, already weather-beaten but unweakened by time and age is the sanctuary and shrine of La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc, because it was found in the year 1620 by Badoc and Sinait fishermen along the shore of Lugo village. The image, encased in a wooden box, together with a life-sized picture of Santo Cristo Milagroso, the statue of angels and one violin, were given to the Sinait fishermen as their share from the mysterious discovery, Since, then, the Sinait Catholic church has become the shrine of the Santo Cristo Milagroso.

The Badoc History

Badoc

Badoc is bounded on the south by the Province of Ilocos Sur; on the north by the town of Pinili; on the west by the Luzon Sea; and on the east by the Municipality of Nueva Era. The town got its name from badok-badok (phleum-pratense), a plant which abounds in the locality, It has land are of 66.41 square kilometers, with a population of 26,737 in 1995.The town’s first settlers were people belonging to a tribe known officially asTingguian but whom the Ilocanos commonly called Itneg. The Spaniards first explored the area in 1572 when Juan de Salcedo made an expedition to the north. He came back in 1574 to formally organize the government of Ilocos. He made Badoc an encomienda of Juan de la Pena. Badoc became an independent parish in 1714.The zealous Augustinians taught the natives advanced agriculture like the cultivation of sugar cane, cotton, corn, rice and indigo. The cultivation of indigo became a lucrative business not only in Badoc but also to the rest of the Ilocos in the late 18th and the first half of the 19th century.During the Philippine Revolutin Milagrosa de Badoc, the patroness of the province.Another object of interest in Badoc is the Juan Luna National Shrine, a two-story edifice which houses the memorabilia of the Filipino genius of the canvass and the creator of internationally-acclaimed masterpieces, whose family – the Lunas were natives of Badoc.on of 1898, Badoc was occupied by the revolutionary forces of General Manuel Tinio. When the war shifted against the Americans, the town and the surrounding areas of Batac and Paoay became the fields of operation of the guerillas of Gregorio Aglipay. When Gregorio Aglipay established the Philippine Independent Church, Badoc became one of the centers of the newly established religious sect. But while Aglipayanism had taken a great stride in Badoc, the town, however, remained a great mecca of Catholicism in the north. Today, the church of Badoc, an imposing structure of bricks and stones houses the Virgen. Badoc today remains an agricultural town but continues on its march towards progress. Farming, fishing, salt-making and cottage industries like the weaving of cotton cloth and the making of basi wine are the major sources of income of the people, the majority of which own the lands they cultivate. An irrigation system serves over 500 hectares of agricultural lands producing primary crops like tobacco, garlic and onions.
